So far, the team is coming together. As of right now, we have 2 doctors, a nurse practioner (Margo!), an RN, a 4th year medical student and (hopefully) 2 pharmacists. We keep expanding what services we can provide, so I’m hoping to add some additional providers. If you are interested or know someone who you think would be interested, please let us know about them or them know about us.
I realize that this is very early, but we are really trying to get the word out as early as possible once we have an upcoming medical trip in the works.
As of now, we are planning on traveling back to the Dominican Republic for the week of January 4-8, 2010. We’ll be using the weekends on each side of that week for travel.
The details are largely still to be determined, but check back periodically as we will update as things develop. Also, we will provide more information about safety, etc. in light of the events in June.
So–in 2 days, the HOMBRE medical student team will be traveling to Santo Domingo for a 2-week service trip. The trip is being facilitated by the DASV in terms of helping with logistics and planning, and the team will be providing care for 4 days in Paraiso and 4 days at Fundación Sol Naciente’s Santo Domingo community health center. As internet access allows, these posts will be updated while the team is in the DR.
We are in the final days of preparing for the next service trip to the Dominican Republic. In this case, the trip is focused on working with first year medical students (M1) students from Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Medicine. We will be in the DR for 10 days, and will be working at the Paraíso site as well as spending some time working with a newly established Fundación Sol Naciente community health center in a separate barrio in Santo Domingo.
The hope is that this trip will provide care to over 1,000 patients and continue to expand our service and engagement with the community.
We are actively recruiting interested medical professionals/providers for our upcoming June 2009 medical service trip to the Dominican Republic. In particular, if you are an MD/NP/PA/Pharmacist interested in this international project, please e-mail us at DominicanAid@yahoo.com.
